Gli Argent sono un gruppo musicale inglese progressive rock fondato nel 1968 dal tastierista Rod Argent, ex componente dei The Zombies.
Biografia
I primi tre demo degli Argent furono registrati nel 1968 e si avvalsero del bassista Mac MacLeod, il quale però successivamente non divenne componente della band.
La formazione originaria della band vedeva come bassista Jim Rodford, come batterista Bob Henrit e Russ Ballard nel ruolo di chitarrista e tastierista. Alla voce si alternavano Ballard e Rod Argent.
Nel 1974 Ballard lasciò la band e fu sostituito da John Verity e dal chitarrista John Grimaldi. Lo scioglimento del gruppo avvenne due anni dopo, nel 1976, quando Rodford, Henrit e Verity fondarono la band Phoenix (la quale durò pochi anni).
Il maggiore successo degli Argent fu "Hold Your Head Up" contenuto nel disco All Together Now. Raggiunse la posizione numero 5 negli Stati Uniti, vendendo oltre un milione di copie e assicurando il disco d'oro alla band..
Il sound della band, propriamente progressive, si avvaleva anche di influenze spiccatamente rock e pop.
La formazione originale della band si è riunita nel 2010 all'High Voltage Festival di Victoria Park, il 25 luglio. Ha poi proseguito con una serie di date nel dicembre dello stesso anno.
Stile musicale
Gli Argent proseguono la strada tracciata dagli Zombies e dal suo tastierista Rod Argent, protagonisti di un rilevante successo negli Stati Uniti tale da farli considerare appieno appartenenti al fenomeno della British Invasion. Ma quando gli Zombies si sciolsero, Rod Argent scelse la via di un gruppo con nuovi elementi che gli desse la possibilità di sterzare lasciandosi alle spalle gli stilemi che lo avevano reso celebre e di inserirsi nella dimensione musicale del rock progressivo, dilagante nell’Inghilterra di fine anni sessanta. La nuova tendenza si appoggiava anche sugli innovativi e complementari metodi compositivi di Argent e del chitarrista Russ Ballard e sulla formazione musicale del tastierista che si era cimentato in esperienze di musica classica, jazz e rock, influenze che confluirono nelle sonorità progressive del gruppo e che culminarono nell’album Nexus, ricco di passaggi di rock sinfonico; ma nonostante la cifra musicale gli Argent non riuscirono mai a raggiungere la popolarità di altre formazioni progressive coeve rimanendo in seconda fila. L’abbandono di Ballard portò il gruppo alla perdita delle miscele sonore originarie in favore di improvvisazioni solistiche strumentali,e tuttavia il gruppo non mancò in seguito di avere un buon successo commerciale.

Argent were an English rock band founded in 1969 by keyboardist Rod Argent, formerly of the Zombies. They had three UK top 40 singles: "Hold Your Head Up", which reached number five and spent 12 weeks on the chart, "Tragedy" (number 34) and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You" (number 18). Two of their albums charted in the UK; All Together Now, which peaked at number 13 in 1972, and In Deep, which spent one week at number 49 in 1973.
History
Original members of the band were Rod Argent on keyboards, bassist Jim Rodford (Argent's cousin and formerly with the Mike Cotton Sound), drummer Bob Henrit and guitarist Russ Ballard (both formerly with the Roulettes and Unit 4 + 2). Lead vocal duties were shared between Ballard, Rodford and Argent.
The first three demos from Argent, recorded in the autumn of 1968 featured Mac MacLeod on bass guitar, though he would not become a member of the group. Rod Argent, Chris White (former Zombies bassist, producer, songwriter) and Russ Ballard were the group's songwriters.
When Ballard left in 1974, he was replaced by guitarist/vocalist John Verity and guitarist John Grimaldi. This lineup produced two albums and a film that was never released (though a clip is available to view on John Verity's website). The band's decision to stop touring late in 1976 has never been fully explained, though the decision might have been influenced by the declining health of one of its members. Rodford, Henrit and Verity briefly continued together under the name Phoenix before going their separate ways, with first Rodford and then Henrit becoming members of the Kinks. Meanwhile, Rod Argent performed some work with Andrew Lloyd Webber and produced a couple of solo albums. He also opened a keyboard shop in the West End of London.
The original Argent lineup reunited at the High Voltage Festival in Victoria Park, London on 25 July 2010, and undertook a short five-date concert tour in December 2010, with gigs in Frome, Southampton, Wolverhampton, Leamington Spa and London.[citation needed]
Argent also reunited for a five-show tour from January to February 2012, before performing one last show at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury as part of a benefit concert, on 2 June 2013, supporting the Zombies, on a bill that also included Marillion members Steve Hogarth and Steve Rothery.
Rodford died after a fall on 20 January 2018, at age 76.

Songs
Argent's biggest hit was the Rod Argent and Chris White composition "Hold Your Head Up", featuring lead vocals by Russ Ballard, from the All Together Now album, which, in a heavily edited single form, reached No. 5 in the US. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
The sound of the band was a mix of rock and pop, but also covered more progressive rock territory in songs like "The Coming of Kohoutek", an instrumental from their Nexus album. When Ballard left the band after Encore, they took an even more progressive/fusion turn with their final Epic album Circus and then signed to a new record label (RCA) for the final 1975 album Counterpoints. By 2005, all albums, including compilations, have been re-released on CD, except Counterpoints.
Legacy
Argent recorded the original version of "God Gave Rock and Roll to You", written by Russ Ballard, which was covered by Kiss in 1991 under the name "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II", and featured prominently at the end of the film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. The song also became a Contemporary Christian rock anthem and was twice covered by the Christian Rock band Petra, in 1977 (on the album Come and Join Us) and again in 1984 (on the album Beat the System), with new verses.
Some of Ballard's compositions became hits when they were covered by other artists, including Rainbow ("Since You Been Gone", from the album Down to Earth, and "I Surrender", from the album Difficult to Cure), Kiss, Petra, Hello, Santana and more recently the Brazilian metal band Oficina G3. The Russ Ballard song "Liar", on Argent's first album, became a hit for Three Dog Night in 1971 and was also released as a single, ten years later, by Graham Bonnet (former Rainbow vocalist, who sang the vocal on "Since You Been Gone"), taken from his debut album Line-Up.
Fish (former lead singer of Marillion) recorded a version of "Hold Your Head Up" for his 1993 album Songs from the Mirror, a selection of his favourite songs. The American band Phish play an instrumental version of "Hold Your Head Up", usually as a transition into a "joke song" by drummer Jon Fishman. "Hold Your Head Up" was covered in 1987 by the band 20/Twenty and (in the same year) by Australian group the Partyboys.[citation needed] Mother Love Bone recorded a cover of "Hold Your Head Up" in 1989. Their version was released on a promotional only 7" vinyl in 1989. It was reissued on 7" vinyl in 2014 as a limited edition Black Friday Record Store Day release on Stardog/Republic Records.[citation needed] The band Jellyfish opened most of their shows with an abbreviated version of "Hold Your Head Up".[citation needed]
